Sport Pilot or Private Pilot certificate? Please help, which one?

I am 16 and would like to fly for a hobby. I also only plan to fly only during day time, clear sky weather. I am very concerned with the safety of flying. So-far I have found that the single-engine, fixed wing S-LSA aircrafts are the safest type of flying of all especially in comparison to a typical private passenger plane. Is this true? Which is safer? I heard of sport planes having a ballistic safety parachute system that deploys. Does this help prevent all accidents?

Sport Pilot cannot add an instrument rating. Must fly VFR.

Sport Pilot must fly at or below 10,000 MSL.

Sport Pilot cannot fly at night.

Sport Pilot cannot fly in Class B airspace (I think all class B; it may be just some class B).

Sport Pilot cannot fly in controlled airspace that requires communication with ATC unless he or she has a sign-off from an instructor that has given the person instruction in radio communications.

Sport Pilot cannot perform the same maintenance tasks as a Private Pilot.

Sport Pilot cannot serve in the same roles as a Private Pilot, such as being the safety pilot for an instrument rated pilot flying under the hood for currency.

Sport Pilot can only fly Light Sport Airplanes (there are also balloons and other types of aircraft; I'm only familiar with LSA). These are limited to 1320 lbs gross weight, 1 passenger, and 120 kts cruise.

Where can I find bank repossessed aircraft?

I am a private Single Engine pilot who aspires to own an private aircraft someday. Like the majority of us, I cannot afford to buy my own aircraft, let alone the cost of up-keep, annuals, tiedown fees, etc. Ultralights are affordable, but not practical for decent cross countries. New LSA, forget it, too expensive. Homebuilts are very appealing, but I want to fly now, not 10 years from now. A lot of used homebuilts seem to cost way too much. I live on a active duty military E-5 pay, so I live and fly cheap. I rent at the flying clubs convenience, which is not always convenient!
I know that occasionally people slip and cannot afford their aircraft. I know repo's happen. Would a bank repossesses aircraft be cheaper to purchase? What sources can I use to locate one? Is there a decent website, Newsletters, or point of contact I can utilize?

However, If you say that you "cannot afford to buy [your] own aircraft, let alone the cost of up-keep, annuals, tiedown fees, etc." then finding a foreclosed plane isn't going to help you as you still won't be able to afford the operational expenses.

after reading "The in-flight diversion handbook" at lulu.com, are GPS' really necessary for flying.

this book opened up my eyes to how easy navigation actually is, most calculations can in fact be done using only a watch, pencil and a brain. GPS' have made pilots lazy, in the process we lost some great aviation skills. furthermore most pilots do not know how to do without a GPS for navigation.

GPS' are not "necessary", however they are a great economical, accurate, and safe tool. It shoud be mandated that all pilots receive a check during their biennial review though. For example, (although many pilots don't do this) fly over the ocean (or other large body of water where there are no TACANs or VOR/DMEs) and have your GPS/INU/CADC go out. Basically get hit by a bolt of lightning and then basically become Charles Lindbergh. The only thing you have is your flight log and a wind computer. Using the past record to predict the future to continue on or return the other way based on fuel consumption. The GPS, when working, provides accurate position to determine GS, which in turn allows the operator to be at an exact place at an exact time for economical (save fuel by not running all over the sky) and safe (go directly to the airport before running out of gas or hit "dir to" an emergency airfield to get a "right now" heading. Basically...they are nice to have for "in case" stuff...plan for the worst, hope for the best!

HAs anyone been to flight training for Southwest Airlines? If so what should I expect?

Hello! I have just been invited to training for a flight attendant position for Southwest Airlines. My packet came in the mail a couple of days ago, and I must say I am a little stressed over all of the information i am expected to know before I even get there! :p I really want to do well, as this has been my dream for about 5 years now. What should I expect in training? Any tips or tricks for studying that may help? Also, are the test multiple choice fill in the blank or what?? HELP PLEASE!!

I can't speak for Southwest, but I can tell you about my experience when I went to flight attendant training for the airline I used to fly for.

I got a similar book in the mail before I started training. Learn all of the stuff, not memorize it, before training starts. We had a test on it immediately. Whoever failed it was kicked out of the program. Studying was easy for me. I caught on to it really good and never really studied outside of class. But others in my group frequently studied as a huge study group. You'll be attached to the hip of the people in your class, so get to know them all well!

Our tests were both multiple choice and fill in the blank with an occasional true/false. The hardest part for me was sea survival portion when we went into the huge pool with our vests on. I got through it okay, but I don't like swimming, even though I grew up on the water.

You'll be fine. Did they tell you though that you'll have a HUGE button on your shirt the first time you work a real flight that says "Flight attendant in training." I got a training flight a while back. They were working a few flights before they went back and took their cumulative exams. Best of luck and hopefully you'll be slinging those little bags of peanuts in no time!
