I was recently on a charter holiday flight...?

I was on a charter holiday flight recently and was ALLOWED to go up to the flight deck and see the pilot and 1'st officer while the plane was IN THE AIR.

I thought this was strictly disallowed after the events of 9/11!

Why did they allow me to go and visit. Is it because of my age (I'm 116) or was I just a lucky one?

Probably not relevant but the flight was from a quiet airport in the UK to Spain
I'm obviously not 116, i'm 16 lol

Although it's not permitted the Captain and his co-pilot obviously thought that a frail man of 116 years old deserved one last treat before departing this earth.

Fractional Jet Ownership

Buying fractional jet ownership with Marquis Jets?

My wife and I are looking into purchasing a jet, after reviewing the the cost associated with owning one we have decided to go with fractional ownership. The name we keep hearing is Marquis Jets. I have visited their site, and I wanted advice from someone NOT in the company. I was wondering what is the average cost for a mid-size jet with them. I was also wondering what was a good fraction of hours to purchase... I was thinking around 50, but we have been to Europe twice this year. Just to give you a view at how much we travel. I also do some business travel, and entertaining business partners. We are also HUGE sports fans and travel to tons of games in the US.

Marquis Jet is part of NetJets, a fractional-ownership operator that belongs to Berkshire Hathaway and has an excellent reputation. From what I've seen, Marquis Jet (actually the Marquis Jet Card) is a low-cost alternative to fractional ownership based on a pay-as-you-go model; I don't think it actually includes fractional ownership of aircraft as the regular memberships do; they talk about "card owners" for the Marquis Card rather than aircraft owners.

The regular fractional ownerships are mighty expensive unless you do an awful lot of flying (or you have an awful lot of money to toss out the proverbial window). The arrangement that suits you best is up to you to decide. Either plan should be orders of magnitude more convenient than flying scheduled air carriers (but correspondingly more expensive, of course), and less expensive than owning your own jet outright (which can quickly slip into a region of diminishing returns unless you spend a big part of your life sitting in airplanes).

Why don't you websearch the fractional jet companies, pick one in Europe, and contact them directly.
Explain that you are a student and need some accurate costs, or a source for accurate costs. As long as they determine you are not a competitor, then you may get what you need.

In addition, and maybe more importantly, do third party charter operators use those call signs when providing extra lift for a fractional operator?

I am a 4000+ hour ATP and presently fly for a charter company that does supplemental work for the major fractional operators (NetJets, Flight Options, Flexjet, etc.)

Third party operators NEVER use fractional callsigns, even if we are in fact flying as "supplemental lift" for one of the fractionals. If the third party operator has a callsign, that is used.

As far as I am aware, all fractional callsigns are derived from the aircraft's tail number (e.g. N415QS becomes ExecJet 415, N125FX becomes Flexjet 125, and N862CW becomes Options 862.) In this sense, they are not "trip numbers" like on the airlines but instead are always attached to that particular airplane. It would seem to me that company policy would require the use of this callsign just as it would with any other air carrier.

I have noticed that the fractionals only use these callsigns when flying within the US. Outside of the US, I only hear them using their tail numbers. I am not certain if this is due to company policy, or if it is because their callsigns are only recognized by the FAA and not by ICAO.

What software (jeppesen?) do private air charter brokers use to prepare quotes? (based on given p/h rates)?

This is actually more complicated then you think.
There are air carriers, air charter companies & brokers, and just 3rd party brokers.
The difference is how each sells its service. Air Carriers simply provide an aircraft for a price. Air charter companies will operate aircraft of their own and also have contracts with other carriers to be able to offer a vast fleet of varying aircraft. Brokers have no actual invested intrest other than to negoatie rates with carriers , add a management fee, and sell that aircraft to a customer.
What goes into actual pricing is quite complicated.
Most carriers price their aircraft based on miles, not so much on actual flight time (altough any helicopter company will charge an hourly rate). The routing also determines the price,as longer flight legs are cheaper per hour for the air carrier. The longer the total flight, the cheaper the rate per mile. With very short distances, usually less than 300sm between legs, their is an added short leg fee to offset the increased fuel costs to fly this leg due to aircrafts do not get to fly at optimal altitude, but rather have to fly at the mid to high 'teens.
Next is future business trends. Can the air carrier sell a one way with a good possiblity of getting another trip. Usually trips to the border (LRD or ELP) will be billed one way, as the potential to get another trip out of Mexico will be highly likely, and can generate alot of revenue.
Next is fleet location, number of aircrafts available, and business levels. Supply and Demand 101, if business levels are high, its a name your price, if slow, its flying for fuel and a very small profit margin.
Many companies that operate air craft use a program designed for their company, some use jeppeson, and some use NavPak. They all do the same function, calcualate straight line distance from point to point. The distance is based on their billed route, based on business levels and where they want to aircraft to go after the revenue trip is done.

According to the link you sent me, you do not need to pay to check-in your first piece of luggage as Mexico was not on the list of places for which you need to pay for your first bag (US, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Island).
Flying international via a domestic airport is a bit of a grey area. If it is on the same reservation you shouldn't need to pay for the bag. But just to make sure call American Airlines on 1-800-433-7300 and ask.
I recently flew US Air from New York to Europe vie Philadelphia and the check-in lady wanted to charge me for my first case! I had to prove to her that i was eligible for a free case. (The airlines do not tell their employees the rules because they know there is a chance the customer won't know their rights and pay for the case when they are eligible for a free one. sick, i know, but there is nothing you can do about it except KNOW YOUR RIGHTS! find out all the info before you fly and avoid being scammed by the airline!

OLD THINGS

As a young woman,

I’d wander around my mother’s home
and find corners of distressed clutter
which begged for brown-papered flight
to naked people who'd find God
in piles of old clothes.

The Bakelite burner failed
to enlighten as to why my mother
was so moved by Depression glass
in boxes of cornflakes.

Peach silk lingered with faded crepe,
and frayed scraps of lacy veils
unravelled long dead vows.

Utility brides poised on council steps
armed with big eared men, geared
for civilisation in bags of grey twill,
the lonely Irish
hearts flapping
in the English wind.

Later, a faded affair
freed from oak drawers, creaky
with dirt. An unknown French hand
elegant in blue italics,
runs wet on wet.

She never understood resistance.

A silk stocking lying stale.
Its partner lost.

As an old woman, I wander.

What wonderful images - I especially like your first full stanza, with the line "naked people who'd find God in piles of old clothes."

Needs reading more than once.

Gets better each time.

Great last line, too.
